Journal Checker Tool

JCT

Journal Checker Tool (JCT) is an online tool created by cOAlition S that enables authors funded by research organisations supporting Plans S to find compliant “routes” through which to publish their articles.

If you are looking for a compliant journal for your funded research, use the Journal Checker Tool. To use the Journal Checker Tool, enter the name of the journal you wish to publish with (or ISSN number), your research funder (NCN) and your current institution (AGH University). This information will then be checked against the publisher and research funders open access policies, as well as any publisher agreements your institution is part of and provide advice on whether there is a compliant publishing route.

The tool checks whether:

  • the journal offers an open access publication path under a CC BY (or equivalent) licence and without embargo,
  • authors have the possibility to preserve their copyright,
  • the journal is fully open access and compliant with Plan S,
  • is covered by a transitional agreement with an institution (for us, NCN),
  • is a transformative journal,
  • it is a subscription journal that allows self-archiving (e.g. publishing a postprint in an institutional repository).

The results given by the Journal Checker Tool are explained below.

Open Access journal

The journal is fully compliant with Plan S:

  • the manuscript published in open access in a journal or publishing platform that makes the version of record immediately open access via its website or possibly an AAM/VoR version made available in a repository,
  • CC BY 4.0 licence (CC BY ND acceptable),
  • APC costs are eligible.

Self-Archiving

The journal does not fully compliant with Plan S:

  • the journal is a hybrid or transformative journal/journal covered by a transformative agreement,
  • CC BY 4.0 licence (CC BY ND acceptable),
  • publisher will allow you to deposit your final accepted manuscript (AAM) in an open access repository with no embargo period and under a CC BY open access (the VoR version will be available for a fee on the journal website). If the publisher refuses to waive the embargo period (even when the author points out that it is a condition required by the research-funding agency), contact the NCN,
  • APC are not recognized as eligible costs.

It is worth checking the publisher's policy, e.g. at Sherpa Romeo.

Rights Retention Strategy RRS

The journal does not fully compliant with Plan S:

  • the journal is hybrid or transformational/covered by a transitional agreement,
  • CC BY 4.0 licence (CC BY ND acceptable),
  • the repository where the manuscript will be deposited (AAM or VoR) must be registered with openDOAR
  • the manuscript’s Acknowledgements section and the cover letter submitted to the journal should include the following RRS clause: "This research was funded in whole or in part by [Funder] [Grant number]. For the purpose of Open Access, the author has applied a CC-BY public copyright licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) version arising from this submission”,
  • before signing an agreement with the publisher, the author must make sure that the copyrights will be retained by the author (if the agreement transfers the copyrights, it is necessary to point out that the grant agreement under which the research is funded requires their retention; if the publisher still refuses to comply contact the NCN),
  • after publication by the publisher, you can deposit your final accepted manuscript (AAM) in an open access repository with no embargo period and under a CC BY open access (the VoR version will be available for a fee on the journal website). If the publisher refuses to waive the embargo period (even when the author points out that it is a condition required by the research-funding agency), contact the NCN,
  • APC costs are ineligible

It is worth checking the publisher's policy, e.g. at Sherpa Romeo.

Transformative Journal

  • the author must make sure that the manuscript will be published under a CCBY8 or a CC-BY-SA10 licence, optionally, a CC-BY-ND licence may be used,
