Tools to support academic work

LibKey is a suite of tools from Third Iron, integrated with the Library’s resources. LibKey automatically recognises whether a given article is available through the university’s subscription or via open access.

The suite provides users with access to the following tools: LibKey Nomad, BrowZine, LibKey.io and LibKey Discovery.

• LibKey Nomad – a browser extension providing quick and direct access to academic articles, both those subscribed to by the AGH University Main Library and those available via open access. The extension can be downloaded from the developer’s website – Third Iron. Once the extension has been installed, select your institution – AGH University of Krakow.
• BrowZine – a platform for browsing journals by title, subject area or ISSN. Additionally, the platform allows you to quickly export citations to tools such as Zotero or Mendeley (more information about BrowZine can be found below).
• LibKey.io – redirects directly to the full texts of articles based on a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) or PMID (PubMed ID). It also works on mobile phones.
• LibKey Discovery – a linking tool integrated with the AGH Libraries Catalogue. It makes e-resources accessible with a single click.

BrowZine is a digital journal shelf that forms part of Third Iron’s LibKey suite of tools. Using BrowZine, you can quickly check whether the AGH University Main Library has access to the journal you’re interested in.

With BrowZine, you can:

• browse journals searched by title, subject area or ISSN,
• export publication details to bibliography managers (Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote),
• share articles with colleagues,
• view tables of contents and download full texts as PDFs.

By creating a personal account on the BrowZine platform, you can access the ‘MyBookshelf’ and ‘My Articles’ features from any web browser. This will also enable synchronisation across devices, including the mobile app.

You should create an account after logging into BrowZine via the university network, using any email address and password of your choice (the login window will appear when you select the ‘MyBookshelf’ or ‘My Articles’ tab).

The ‘MyBookshelf’ feature allows you to easily create and organise your own space with your favourite titles. You can add and remove titles, move them between four virtual bookshelves, and customise the names of individual bookshelves and shelves. This feature is available once you have logged in to your personal user account.

If you wish to download the BrowZine mobile app:

• depending on your device’s operating system (Android, iOS or Kindle Fire), visit the Google Play Store, Apple App Store or Amazon App Store,
• search for the ‘BrowZine’ app and download it to your device (if you have previously used BrowZine in the Open Access library, please uninstall the app and reinstall it).

Access BrowZine:

• tap the app icon to open BrowZine,
• select AGH University of Krakow from the list of libraries, enter your AGH SSO login details and click ‘Continue’ to access the library,
• start browsing journals using the ‘Subject’ drop-down menu or search for a specific title.

The Writefull software suite is designed to proofread academic texts in English. Writefull checks grammar, punctuation, spelling and style. It suggests improvements to sentence structure in academic texts, identifies sentences that should be supported by a citation, and suggests subject-specific vocabulary.

The suite comprises the following programmes:

• Writefull for Word – an add-in for MS Word that checks grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation and style. It is compatible with Microsoft Office 2013 or later.

• Writefull for Overleaf – provides real-time language support for LaTeX files edited in Overleaf. It checks grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation and style.

• Writefull Revise – analyses text for grammatical correctness, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation and style. Once the text has been entered, the programme suggests changes.

Please note: To run the programmes, you must register using an AGH email address. A single account is sufficient to log in to all programmes in the Writefull suite.

EndNote is a tool developed by Clarivate Analytics. The programme allows you to:

• collect bibliographic data on publications from various databases, websites, catalogues and the internet,
• organise information into folders and share it with other EndNote users,
• inserting citations into Microsoft Word using the Cite While You Write add-in,
• automatically generating a reference list based on citations,
• using the many bibliographic styles available within the programme,
• easily changing the formatting of citations and the reference list to comply with a different bibliographic style.

You can log in to EndNote using your individual Web of Science account. The tool is available under a national academic licence (online version).

Zotero is a free bibliography management tool. Among other things, it allows you to:

• download and collect bibliographic data,
• export data to .doc or .odt formats,
• cite sources within the text,
• change the citation style throughout the document,
• automatically generate a reference list.

Mendeley is a bibliography management programme and a social platform for researchers. Among other things, the programme allows you to:

• creating your own library of publications,
• accessing the contents of your library online from anywhere in the world, from any computer or mobile device,
• easily inserting citations and generating bibliographies,
• collaborating and exchanging comments with other researchers.

The basic version of the programme is free of charge.

Citavi is a tool for collecting and organising information. The application allows you to store bibliographic data, citations, comments, references and multimedia files. The tool consists of three modules:

• a knowledge organiser,
• a bibliographic editor,
• and a task manager.

The Citavi programme:

• enables you to search over 4,000 databases and library catalogues (including WorldCat),
• offers access to a wide range of citation styles,
• works with other bibliography management programmes (such as EndNote, Zotero, Mendeley), searching them and importing publication titles,
• downloads full-text articles,
• allows you to view PDFs, web pages, documents, images and presentations,
• enables collaboration with other users on a shared project using the Citavi Team add-on.

The free version of the programme allows you to work on Team and Solo projects containing up to 100 titles.

InCites Benchmarking & Analytics is a bibliometric tool used to analyse data from over 77 million publications sourced from the Web of Science Core Collection and Journal Citation Reports databases. Among other things, InCites allows you to analyse and compare the research output of authors, institutions and countries in terms of various bibliometric indicators, track trends in the world of science, and support the development of research strategies, as well as publication and HR/administrative decisions. The tool is available under a national academic licence.

If you wish to use InCites, you must have a personal Web of Science login account. A single account is sufficient to access all available Clarivate databases and tools.

SciVal is used to analyse data contained in the Scopus database. Among other things, the tool enables the analysis of research institutions’ achievements, comparisons with other organisations, the assessment of potential collaborators and partners, and the analysis of trends in the world of science. The tool is available under a national academic licence.

If you wish to use SciVal, you must have a personal account to log in to Elsevier’s services. This may be an account previously created in the ScienceDirect or Scopus databases, or on the SciVal website.

AutoCAD is a programme designed for creating, editing and analysing technical documentation in a 2D and basic 3D environment. It enables users to produce working drawings, diagrams, projections and cross-sections in accordance with the principles of technical drawing. It supports layers, blocks, dimensioning and annotations. The software is used, amongst other things, in architecture, construction, engineering and technical design.

You can use the software in the Reading Room of the Special Collections Department.

Inventor Professional is a parametric 3D design programme used in the teaching of mechanical and structural design. It enables the creation of solid models, assemblies, constraints and technical documentation based on 3D models. It allows for basic motion analysis and collision detection.
